East Tennessee History Center in Downtown Knoxville

The East Tennessee History Center is located right on Gay Street in the heart of downtown, this museum gives visitors a well-rounded look at the region’s past and how it still shapes life in Knoxville today.

The museum features a combination of temporary exhibits and a permanent installation titled “Voices of the Land: The People of East Tennessee.” This signature exhibit traces the area’s story from early Native American cultures through the Civil War, industrialization, and into the present. It highlights everyday people and key events while tying local history to places you’ll begin recognizing around town, like familiar street names or historic buildings.
