If you’ve seen a photo of Knoxville, chances are the Sunsphere was in it. That giant gold ball in the sky? Yep, that’s us. Built for the 1982 World’s Fair, it’s one of the most recognizable parts of the city, and still a favorite stop for locals and visitors alike.

So, What Is the Sunsphere?

  • It’s a 266-foot tower topped with a gold-glass sphere

  • The gold tint? Real gold dust was used in the glass

  • Built for the 1982 World’s Fair

  • Now it’s one of the most iconic views in East Tennessee


What’s Inside?

Head to the 4th-floor observation deck to find:

  • 360° views of downtown, the Tennessee River, and Smoky Mountains

  • Displays and photos from the 1982 World’s Fair

  • A gift shop with Sunsphere merch (great for souvenirs)


Why Visit?

Because it’s:

  • Super affordable: $5 for adults, $1 for kids (with paying adult)

  • Full of history and great views

  • In the middle of World’s Fair Park (with fountains, green space, and walking paths)

Bonus: You might run into Mayor Tyree—Knoxville’s robot mascot—on Tuesdays to Fridays before 1:30 PM.

  • Monday–Friday: 10 AM – 5 PM

  • Saturday: 9 AM – 5 PM

  • Sunday: 12 PM – 4 PM

  • Closed daily from 1:30–2:30 PM for employee break
